How can domestic leaders respond to global governance?
According to Whitman (2005), one of the challenges in today’s international system is that there is no global government to settle disputes, mediate state-to-state interactions, and provide a strong rule of law for states to adhere to. “Economic actions are mediated by legal institutions, assigned roles, and shifting associations.” (Whitman, 2005). If establishing a global government is not possible in the near future, then states will have a more challenging path to pursue in juggling both national and humanity’s interest, especially in environmental issues. The world should be governed by leaders and institutions who can peacefully co-exist, with preserving the environment and humanizing people as the top priorities. Moreover, when states participate and have equal roles in governing world affairs, there is a higher chance in lessening global issues that halt development. A state’s leader should embody traits that would protect the national interests, while formulating preventions and solutions for global problems that call for collective action.
