What is the first type of Multiple Sclerosis?

The first type of Multiple Sclerosis is the Clinically Isolated Syndrome. It is caused by inflammation and Demyelination, or the process where abnormal immune reaction attacks the myelin, causing the substance to be damaged and as well as other nerve fibers. This may last for at least 24 hours but is not enough to be diagnosed as Multiple Sclerosis because this may be a one-time episode or the patient may develop a more severe case of Multiple Sclerosis. There are also two types of CIS, namely Monofocal episode, and Multifocal episode. The first one means that a patient may experience a single neurologic sign or symptom that is caused by a single lesion. The latter means that the patient experiences more than one symptom caused by lesions in more than one place. In addition, there is a higher chance of another occurring episode when CIS is accompanied by lesions on a brain MRI, whereas, there is a lower risk for patients to develop Multiple Sclerosis when CIS is not accompanied by MRI-detected brain lesions.
