Why should Filipinos be aware of International Relations?
International Relations is defined as the interaction of states and non-state actors in the international arena. State and non-state actors have a complex interdependence regarding governance, trade, resources, policies, and law. International Relations is more relevant nowadays due to the phenomenon of globalization; therefore, entities communicate through negotiation and diplomacy to advance their respective interests. Common Filipinos are affected by globalization in different aspects such as, purchasing imported goods, trying out services that originated abroad, and learning about foreign cultures through media.
Through globalization, the Philippines has a clearer window towards the events happening beyond the borders of its territory. Filipino children get to learn about scientific innovations by foreigners and use the English language to communicate in school, Filipino teenagers get to enjoy watching Hollywood films and using social media, Filipino adults get expand their profession or their business through partnerships from different states. Filipinos are granted these opportunities because our diplomats play their roles well in maintaining friendly diplomatic relations abroad. Foreigners can invest in the Philippines, which everyone can benefit to. Common folks can have better lives due to technological aid provided by other states such as Japan and China. This can improve the quality of their lives because the world is interdependent with each other. When foreign companies are granted permits to invest in the Philippines, they, too give benefits such as offering Overseas Filipino Workers more job opportunities in their home state or reducing trade tariffs for Philippine products to enter their economy, therefore, making it a win-win situation.
