Should art be censored?
While art can be defined as something beautiful and inspiring, fine art usually entails things that are personal to the artist. This art is meant to be viewed and feelings and opinions are meant to be culled from this. There may be an entirely different meaning for the art to the artist that the viewing public may also see. They may also generate their own feelings. It’s all good. Sometimes an artist creates a work that may be considered by certain parts of society as taboo. This can cause controversy and quite a stir among some. Does this mean that the art should not be displayed or viewed? Censoring is suppressing any parts that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable or a threat to security but who is it to say what is acceptable? The National Art Education Association has made it clear that “the individual has the right to accept or reject any work of art for himself or herself personally but does not have the right to suppress those works of art…with whom he or she does not agree.”
