What to do if you’re drowning?

What to do if you’re drowning?

Drowning is the third most common cause of accidental deaths in the US and the number one cause of deaths in national parks. People tend to panic when they fall into the water, which leads them to mentally sabotage themselves out of getting to safety. Without quick thinking, you can’t necessarily rely on others to rescue you, especially if you are alone. The best way to prevent yourself from drowning is learning how to save yourself from drowning. And if you’re ever caught in a situation in the water, just remember to relax. A lot of times, people who panic and flail their arms in the water are exhibiting what we call active drowning, which is flapping their arms up and down, with no forward motion to get them to the side of the pool. make sure to go either forward or backward, don’t just waste energy trying to stay afloat. Make that motion count and head towards the side of the pool or shore. If you’re ever caught in the water fully clothed, you can actually make a flotation device from those clothes. Also, try your best not to swim alone so that when worse case scenarios come, you will have companions who will save you from drowning.
