How does google translate work?

Online translators such as Google Translate run on statistics rather than a set of rules. These online translators base from documents uploaded online that have been translated by human translators. Aside from that, Google Translate also uses United Nations documents that are translated in its six official languages. By using these documents, online translators now have a vast array of words, structure, data to choose from. Finding linguistic data large enough to create legitimate statistical analyses is no easy feat. Given that more documents are available in English than in any other language, the data almost always uses English as an intermediary step when translating between two languages that aren’t English. For example, when translating from Russian to Spanish, Google Translate will first translate the text from Russian to English, and then from English into Spanish. As a result, when translating in languages other than English, machine translations actually involve two iterations. Therefore, it is not advisable to rely solely on online translators in classes and trips abroad since a person might be “lost in translation” and offend other cultures due to online translators being not 100% accurate.
