Rizal presented questions that counter other author’s references in regards to the slavery of Indios. Rizal noted that Morgan’s observation of slavery of Indios was not in the same context with the European definition of slavery, which according to Argensola, some slaves were allowed at their master’s table and permitted to marry members of his family. In the context of slavery in the Philippines, brutal leaders abused their power. The Spaniards sold Indios, took them from their homes, and that their living conditions were worse than those of slaves in other places. This resulted in the Filipinos being passively resistant to the cultural colonization of Spaniards. They did not comply easily, and this resulted in them being classified as lazy and ungrateful Indios. In addition, Dr. Jose Rizal defended the Filipino natives. He stated that Filipinos were not lazy, but their actions, or lack thereof, were only a direct reaction to the abuses, discriminations, degradations being made by the Spaniards in the colonial era.
