Is the Philippines ready for Federalism?
The Philippines is not yet ready towards a shift in the system of government due to the economic instability and rampant graft and corruption. Before the government considers making the great shift, they must consider the negative factors which will affect the marginalized sector from an economic standpoint, such as the labor class and indigenous people. The government must take into account the exploitation of the labor class and people in the poverty line, that will cause further divide amongst the classes which should be in fact, non-existent in a modern democratic country. In addition to that, in the proposed Pimentel Plan, the legislative branch will have at least 350 members, which is considered impractical for political analysts. Since the country will have 12 states, and through majority votes, a state can secede. This would only cause the Philippines to further fall into the traps of divisiveness. Before transforming to Federalism, there should be careful deliberation among a delegation of political experts.
