Why does President Duterte support China?

President Duterte is being bashed online in many social media sites because of his support for China. Some people call him disrespectful names because of his friendly foreign policy towards China even after the decision of the Arbitration court. Based from an international relations expert’s perspective, this is a realist move because President Duterte’s camp is aware of the fact Philippine’s military might is no match for China’s military power. The current administration’s moves are based on diplomacy and negotiations. They avoid hostile foreign policies because this would cause a greater problem. Learning to co-exist with China is the Philippines’ strategy in order to have peaceful relations. This is where diplomacy becomes important in the 21^st century. With modernization and globalization, states, global leaders, non-governmental organizations, multinational corporations, and other actors should know how to peacefully negotiate and coexist with each other to be able to live in a prosperous and progressive world.
