Are school dress codes important?

More news appears on television and on social media sites that girls from different schools get sent home or penalized for defying a ridiculous school dress code. Some protest that these dress code are unnecessary, while some think that dress codes are a way of shaping a student’s discipline. One student is reported to have been sent home because she was wearing a long skirt, while one got a written warning because she wore a sleeveless blouse. Dress codes are important, not because it is meant to avoid males being distracted, but is necessary to shape a student’s thinking on how they can present themselves in the professional world. Students must know that they cannot wear certain clothes on certain formal occasions. If they are resistant in following simple school guidelines, how can they be able to follow guidelines when they work in the future? Showing up in a casual attire in a formal business dinner can be insulting to your business partners or clients. Students must know when it is right to protest for something, or if what they are fighting for is unnecessary and useless.
