What is ASMR?
ASMR is an abbreviation for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. According to Banissy, Jonas, and Cohen Kadosh (2014), ASMR is a static like or tingling sensation that begins in the scalp and spreads throughout the body that is triggered by relaxing sounds like whispering and soft speaking, brushing of hair, tapping, and water dripping. A lot of youtube videos are dedicated to making ASMR videos to help people with anxiety, depression, and fatigue to relax, fall asleep, and feel good about themselves through positive affirmations. There are different kinds of ASMR videos like tapping sounds, whispering, and soft speaking, and one of the most popular types is the roleplay. Roleplay videos include trips to the hair salon or spa, doctor’s checkup, hotel check-in, virtual flight attendant, and healing and reiki sessions. ASMR videos are not sexual videos. This is a myth that has to be debunked because some YouTubers create ASMR videos that are somewhat sexual. ASMR intends to reduce depression and anxiety and promote sleep and relaxation and should not be viewed as something sexual due to a couple of videos that only want views.
