What to do if your parents are forcing you to major in something you don’t want?
Choosing a college major is one of the crucial decisions a person has to do in his life because this will somehow define what he can do for the rest of his life. Though this statement may be untrue to some cases, usually, employers give priority to job seekers who finished a degree related to the job he or she is applying for. This is because employers aim to reduce training time and cost during hiring. In addition, sometimes a student cannot control their parents’ opinion on what they want their children to take up for college. This is because parents think they want the best for their children. Their children might be taking over the family business or want them to have titles and have a prestigious profession. And at times, this clashes with what their children want. Some parents want their children to pursue law or medicine, whereas their children want to artists or architects. During the difficult discussion with your parents, try to convince them that you have a natural talent for the profession you want to pursue. Tell them that you are thinking long-term and that you would want to live a fulfilling career. If they object since they will be the one paying for your college tuition, try looking for scholarships so you get to have the upper hand in deciding what you’ll be majoring in. At the end, it is your life, and you will be the one walking through your journey. Not even your parents should decide how to live your life.
